We challenge our students to speak ENGLISH ONLY! Students sign an English Contract (see below) at the beginning of each term, and they also compete for prizes in our popular English Contest. Read about them in the summary below.

  • I have come to this program to improve my English ability.

  • I believe that regular use of English will improve my English skills.

  • I believe that use of my native language on campus is unfair to my classmates because it steals English learning opportunities from them.

  • I understand that success in learning English will depend on my efforts to use it every day.

  • I agree to speak only English on campus and on field trips.

Your Signature ____________________

  • You will begin the semester with a card worth 1000 points (please write your name on the back).

  • Each card is numbered 1 - 20, and each number is worth 50 points.

  • If you fail to use English on campus or on field trips, the person who catches you will ask for your card and will put an X over one number on your card.

  • You must carry your English Contest card with your Student ID at all times—failure to carry your card will result in two X marks on your card on the following day of class.

  • Lost points may be regained by giving a short speech to any ESL professor on a topic of your choice—ESL Instructors will put their initials next to your X after listening to and approving your prepared speech (speeches: Level 1 students: 1 minute, Level 2: 2 minutes, Level 3: 3 minutes, Level 4: 4 minutes)

  • Great prizes such as gift certificates to local restaurants and shops will be awarded to students who complete the semester with the full 1000 points.

  • Remember: Specific permission must be given by teachers for native language use on campus or on field trips.

  • Who’s involved in this contest? Everyone: all students, faculty, administration, and staff are invited to participate! Consider this your final warning, and let the contest begin!
